“The Absent Christ: Early Medieval Experiments in Representation”

Visual absence is a cornerstone of medieval image making, liturgical practices, and theology. Indeed, the Gospels frequently required medieval artists to not figure—whether in full or in part—Christ’s body. In this paper, I explore how early medieval artists ca. 950-1050 took up this representational challenge with new intensity to at once figure and qualify Christ’s absence through highly innovative formal means.
